Eye Care - What You Did Not Know










Eyes are one the most important organs in our body.

There are many health and medical issues regarding eye care and vision disorders




You need to know the difference between an ophthalmologist, optometrist and optician so that you know whom to approach in case of medical issues and eye care.

Ophthalmologist

Ophthalmologist  - is a medical doctor

He specialises in eye and vision care.

Ophthalmologists are different from optometrists and opticians

An ophthalmologist




Diagnoses
Treats  eye diseases
Performs eye surgery
Prescribes and fits eyeglasses and contact lenses
Correct vision problems.

Optometrist
An optometrist is not a medical doctor.

Optometrists  provide primary vision care




They perform
Sight testing and correction
Diagnosis,
Treatment
Management of vision changes
They are licensed to practice optometry,

Primarily  perform eye exams and vision tests
They prescribe and dispense corrective lenses
They detect eye abnormalities,
Prescribe  medications for certain eye diseases.

Optician

Opticians are technicians

Trained to verify, design, fit frames, eyeglass lenses, contact lenses and other devices to correct eyesight.




They use prescriptions which are supplied by  optometrists or ophthalmologists

They do not test vision

They do not  write prescriptions for visual correction.

They are not  permitted to diagnose and  treat eye diseases.
